The Portuguese Olympic Committee and the Municipalities of Portimão and Lagoa signed a protocol for the organisation of the ICMG General Assembly in Alvor

Another important step has been taken towards the organisation of the Portimão-Lagoa 2027 Mediterranean Beach Games. The Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) and the two Algarve municipalities signed a protocol on Thursday to ensure the organisation of the General Assembly of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG), which will take place in Alvor on Saturday, 29 November. The meeting will bring together delegates from 26 National Olympic Committees and precedes the major multisport event scheduled to take place in Portugal in September 2027.

The Presidents of the COP, Portimão and Lagoa have expressed their ambition for the Mediterranean Beach Games to be “the best ever”.

Fernando Gomes, President of the COP, thanked the Presidents of the two municipalities for their commitment. In the presence of Iakovos Filippousis, Secretary General of the ICMG, he reaffirmed the COP's commitment “to organising the best Games ever, as is customary in Portugal. When we organise a competition for the first time, it is usually always the best,” he stressed.

Álvaro Bila, Mayor of Portimão, described the partnership as “extremely important for the Algarve, for the country and for the two municipalities”. “The Mediterranean Games will be a mark that will connect us forever,” he said.

Luís Encarnação, Mayor of Lagoa, also reaffirmed his commitment to working towards a successful multisport event. “We are looking forward to 2027 and are available to continue working together. We want to organise one of the best editions of the Games ever,” he said.

Ahead of the General Assembly, the ICMG Executive Committee meeting will take place on Friday. Both events will be held at the Pestana Alvor Praia Hotel.
